Quality journalism must be grounded in reliable research and sound analysis, and apart from its journalism on African affairs for the likes of the pan-African journal Ogojiii and for Johannesburg's Financial Mail, Winterslust has conducted research for clients as diverse as Good Governance Africa (GGA) in Johannesburg, the Salamanca merchant banking group in London, and Executive Research Associates (ERA) in Johannesburg, while serving as a research associate for Accountability International in Brussels.

In 2021, Winterslust was appointed by the Argentine Ministries of Defence (Human Rights Bureau) and Foreign Affairs (Commission of Historic Memory) in Buenos Aires to manage the Investigations Team of the Argentina-South Africa Research Project which includes the South African National Prosecuting Authorities’ Missing Persons Task Team.
