TAILORED & SPECIALISED SKILLS INTERVENTIONS


Winterslust offers a unique Hostile Environments Awareness Training (HEAT) course that includes hands-on weapons identification and safety, as well as tailored investigative journalism workshops for clients such as the world's ninth-largest newspaper, Times of India.
With over three decades working in the daily and weekly press, and having undergone academic fellowships at Duke University (USA), and at the International Institute for Journalism and Universität Hildesheim (Germany) – buttressed by field experience in 47 countries including numerous war-zones, post-conflict, and post-genocide zones – Winterslust has trained literally hundreds of editors and journalists in the following fields:
a) Conflict-sensitive Journalism (CSJ) for clients such as the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, for the University of Chapel Hill in the USA, for journalists from across Africa for the Union of African Journalists in Egypt, for Internews in Bangladesh, for the International Centre for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) in the Solomon Islands, and for the Thomson Reuters Foundation in Southern Africa;
b) Hostile Environments Awareness Training (HEAT) for clients such as the International Committee of the Red Cross / Red Crescent (ICRC) and for various mainstream and community newspapers in South Africa (includes certified Level 2 First Aid if necessary);
c) Digital Security Training for clients such as Accountability International in Belgium;
d) Investigative Journalism for clients such the World Association of Newspapers (WAN-IFRA), in Sri Lanka and India, for The Times of India – the world’s ninth-largest circulation newspaper – in India, and for various newspaper clients in South Africa;
e) Introduction to Journalism for clients such as NOW Media in South Africa;
f) Specialist Reporting
- Reporting on Land in Africa for clients such as the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) and Transparency International across the African continent;
- Reporting on Migration, and Against Hate Speech and Xenophobia for clients such as the UN’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and its International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Zambia and South Africa, and the American Bar Association in Tunisia;
- Reporting on HIV, Poverty, and Vulnerable Populations for clients such as the UK’s Department for International Development (DfID) in Namibia, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and Botswana, and Midwestern University (USA) in South Africa; and
- Reporting on Science for clients such as the University of Botswana and the Department of Science and Innovation in South Africa.
